People You May or May Not Know....But Should....Mark Loughman and BAE....

....The CD Giveaway at the bottom of this post is now closed....

When I was 12 I wanted to be Lemmy....When I was 14 I wanted to be Tony Platt or Mutt Lang...."still do"....When I heard AC/DC Back in Black....I very quickly realize it sounded....not just a little better....but a lot better compared to all the other albums I was listening to at the time....and I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life....I wanted to be a sound engineer....

I remember catching the 192 bus into Stockpot to try and get a job at Strawberry Recording Studios....I remember bugging the hell out of Andy Macpherson at Revolution Studios trying to get a job there....And now years later all those studios are gone....gone the way most million pound recording studios have gone....replaced by a few hundreds pounds worth of laptop....some software....a few plug-ins and some nice monitors and a rack or two of outboard FX's....Of course you now need to know what your doing more than ever...."but that's what YouTube's for"....Mic placement together with blankets and pillows have become an art form in itself....But slowly my racks of gear are being used less and less as plug-ins get better and better....

"oh look....Manc Grey Sky...."

Recording gear as with guitars and amps....you can honestly say....”we have never had it so good”....but some things....like telecasters and tubes are still as important today as they were in the 1950's....The humble Microphone Pre Amplifier....not as glamours as a large diaphragm condenser microphone or Pro-Tools....but just as important....The relatively cheap Shure SM57 through a dedicated mic pre-amp will give a 10x improvement in sound quality above the same SM57 plugged straight into a recording input....Most recording inputs that you can buy today are at most just Analog to Digital Converters....they are not mic pre-amps....Even the beautiful UA ApolloTwin is just a converter with fancy software....To be honest I would be better off with a Apollo Twin....I'd probably use it more....but I proffer using my mics and my mic pre's....I enjoy the process....and I beleave in getting the best sound possible from the start....Fixing something in the mix is always going to end in disaster ....so you need a mic-pre....

If you've not seen Dave Grohl's film Sound City...."why not"....the star of the film is Sound City's Neve 8028 analog mixing console....The same desk that Nirvana used for the album Nevermind....The same desk that recorded some of the best music to ever be recorded....So why is the Neve 80 desk so good....it's the 1073 mic pre....Rupert Neve throughout his whole career has been obsessed with creating the perfect EQ circuit....when designing the 1073 Rupert Neve picked the frequencies that he believed to be the perfect range....even boosted into distortion the 1073 still sounds musical....The Carnhill / St Ives transformers Neve used to isolate the audio signal within the 1073 were used because again they sounded the most musical....With the big sound of 70's rock guitar....the sound of Rock n Roll”....the 1073 has never been bettered....

This nicely brings us to Mark Loughman....who is Mark Loughman and more importantly....where is this post going....in short Mark is a ex Mancunian who wanted to be a rock star....Who moved to LA to become said rock star....Started working for Brent Averill Enterprises....Brent Averill was the guy you went to if your 20 year old Neve desk had a problem and needed fixing....Then when recording on old desks became more problematic than they were worth and SSL desks were the law....Brent Averill came up with the idea of racking up old 1073 mic-pres and EQ modules with standalone power supply units so you could record with old Neve mic-pre's at whatever recording studio you were working in....

 No Video - Link Here

But with retirement looming Brent Averill wanted to passed on the reins and sell up....Mark having worked for Brent for nearly a decade was the perfect choice....BAE as the company is now known....has gone on to leave the Repair and Mod work behind and create perfect reproductions of old Neve modules....using the same Carnhill / St Ives transformers Neve used....right down to the same Canford wire used in the originals....BAE has gone on to improve upon the original design....BAE 1073's now have extended frequency ranges....added DI outputs using Jensen transformers and created stand alone versions....the 1073 DMP for the musician on the go....But ultimately reproduction doesn't do justice to what BAE has done with Mark at the helm....Attention to detail bordering on obsessive....and with the tolerances of 70's components nearing 15/20%....while today's tolerances are more like 2/3%....you could say BAE makes 1073's the way Neve never made 1073's....

As you can tell I'm quite taken with the BAE stuff....and as good as the UA Apollo Twin is....it's not a BAE 1023...."I wouldn't loose an arm for a 1073....but I could easily kill for two 1023L's"....Five grand plus VAT is a lot of money....but so is a Mac book Pro....and that would end up in the bin....where as a 1023 in twenty years would still be a 1023....and still worth 5 grand plus....

Now we come to our destination and the real reason for this post....Not content with being mild mannered BAE Boss by day....Mark Loughman by night is Hong Kong Phooey...."sorry"....Mark Loughman is also a bit of a Rock Star....under the guise of product development no doubt”....releasing a CD of his songs....Mark also likes to help out the local LA unknown's by letting them play on his CD's....People like Matt Sorum....Josh Homme....Steve Sevens and Dr Jonathan Aronoff's louder brother Kenny....Now as I was supposed to do this post months ago....I have a copy of “My Zanzibar is So Fudo” to give away....but as I'm a mess....

Mark has a new CD out already “Bleedin Aura”....So I ordered two copy's again....one for me and one for you....but Mark's lovely wife Hanni sent a spare....I was hoping for a 1073 Dual DMP....”I'd have been happy with a used one”....So one lucky trendsetter will win a copy of both CD's and a lucky runner up will get a copy of just the new CD "Bleedin Aura"....

To win just find me on Tweeter...."hint....hint....it's at the top of the Post"....and in my timeline I have put a photo of the Fudo CD....tweet me back on the photo tweet and in 30 days from now....17th April 2016....I will pick 2 winners on 17th May 2016...."I'll pick the winners on YouTube so you can see there has been no cheating"....I will inform the winners on Tweeter and you'll have to send me your address....anyone from anywhere can enter....oo oo oo....nearly forgot....Mark also does a weekly web blog live stream called...."Don't Forget Your Lunchbox"....that you should check out....Thursday 12 noon PST....

Sending Love to Frankie Whyte....

Regular readers will know the name Frankie Whyte....in a world of over sexualisation in music Frankie walks her own path....Frankie is a guitarist in the same rock star mold as Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett....and as the lead singer and guitarist of her own band Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols she has bigger balls than most for getting up on stage and doing it in the first place....

I was listening to her bands EP....Hollywood Ending....while reading Twitter/doing nothing and came across a post from Frankie and wondered why she had not been on Lunch with Dan Boul recently....she is after all a 65Amps Artist....I suddenly knew the reason why....

"There are five stages of recovery for the brain after a trauma, and I have recently been assessed at stage two. To put this in perspective, stage 1 was: can you stand up, can you tie your shoes, how do you process light, how do you process sound. Now it’s can you walk, and for how long. Can you look at a page in a book. Can you problem solve coherently. Can you write things down and if so, for how long.
Certainly the arc of recovery is longer now looking back than I could have estimated or imagined in September when I had the accident. But I think that’s okay. Perhaps oddly, even amidst moments of extreme illness or incapacitation, this concussion season has never felt quote-unquote like something “bad” that has happened. It is really hard at times, scary at other times, painful, it is challenging, it is purposeful, but to put it as succinctly as I can for those who ask: it mostly feels like life. We live things and they become our stories."

I then spent the next hour trying to find out what the fuck was going on....reading between the lines I think she came off her skateboard but didn't bounce back up....I remember coming off mine as a kid...."I still have one of my boards in the garage"....I also remember coming off my push bike as a grown up....coming round to pins and needle's all over my body....wondering why I was pushing my head hard into the dirt....after the first couple of times you knock yourself out it's kinda trippy....not....

No Video....get it here...

I sent her a shout out on Twitter hoping her well....bought her bands EP....Hollywood Ending...."again....why not"....from Amazon and watched her Keep Walking video on YouTube....Send her some love guys if you can....because apart from being really nice....she's one of us.... ....Keep Walking Frankie...."no joke intended...."....k.j.

Facebook....RIP....

I've come off Facebook....I've had too because it was not working how I thought it was going to work....it just got silly with too much personal crappolla when it was supposed to be "my blog" about Guitars and Amps and Stuff....not....Stuff more Stuff with Guitars and Amps and some more Stuff....

So Facebook is gone....it is no more....Long Live Le Bollocks....I've now got about 6 months worth of posts to post...."what have I done"....k.j.

p.s. I've just found out I have 64 pages of comments...."yes you did red right....64 pages"....most do seem to be spam...."Milfs with lusciously huge boobs....caught my eye"....if you have left a comment....sorry they are all getting deleted....can not face going through them all...."yes that includes Hugh Boobs"....k.j.

Crimson Guitars Fretboard Restorative....

I'm going to assume that you know of Crimson Guitars in the UK....Owned by Mr Ben Crowe....yes the big dude on Youtube with all the tattoos on his head....if not....here's a crash course....

if you can not see the above video....it's here....

I've bought some of his tools recently and really like his Fretboard Restorative oil...."It's without doubt the best fretboard oil I have ever used"....I've used most of the lemon oils on the market over the years....Some of which to be honest have been good....but made of the nastiest stuff you could ever think of using while some....just plain dreadful....used once and never used again...."you can get a hint from the photo which is which"....

Anywho....I had to make some new jaws for one of my vices....A nice piece of mahogany offcut was chosen....Jaws were cut and shaped....that then screamed out for the Crimson Guitars Fretboard Restorative oil to be applied just to finish them off....

Not much to look at after the sanding but with the Fretboard Restorative the grain cames out nicely....You can really see the oil working in the next photo....Left has one coat....Right has two coats....It was a shame I didn't do a better job sanding them both....Applied to an abused fingerboard I hope you can see the oil is going to work wonders....

The jaws have a 10 degree bevel on them so that they can move to grip the taper of a guitars neck as the vice is closed....They work very well and making them out of mahogany should mean they last a life time...."or until you lose one in a move about"....Then I will admit....I did get just a tad sad thinking it would be nice to have matching jaws in my other vice...."sad or OCD....you decide"....

Superglue blends in nicely with the Fretboard Restorative....always nice to know....The pins are so my Neck Jig stays in the vice even if the jaws come loose for some reason...."neck jig and a guitar crashing to the floor would not be good....Once....could happen to anyone....but twice....and you're a twat....and when I say crashing to the floor I mean grabbed at an alarming angel with my heart in my mouth"....The pins were install before doing anymore work on said guitar...."I'm sad....not a twat"....

I then just had to give my Wooden Lady Luck a good going over....She has sat on my window sill for the past 10 years and has dried out in the sunlight...."Lady Luck has two sides....some people get one side....some get the other....thinking about it....she says more about me than anybody else"....

As you can see the Crimson Guitars Fretboard Restorative is awesome stuff....the smallest amount on a cloth will be plenty enough for a fretboard wipe over....Ben should think about selling tiny bottles of this stuff  as one 100ml bottle would last for years if only used on two guitars....even if one was a Warwick Bass with a oiled finish...."just for players it would be nicer in a 20ml bottle with a free cloth....just saying Ben"....

Crimson Guitars Fretboard Restorative Oil is now being sold in 150ml bottles for £9.95 plus P+P

Phil X....‘A Day for Charlotte’....Interview....

Denise Westwood interviews guitarist Phil X for ‘A Day for Charlotte’ benefit show at The Whisky Monday 8/17/2015....

A Day for Charlotte is an event and auction to raise funds for Charlotte Avery's fight against leukemia.
On May 26, 2015 at 18 months of age Charlotte was diagnosed with leukemia. On May 27, 2015 a bone marrow biopsy confirmed that the type of leukemia is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), the most curable form of childhood leukemia.
Unfortunately, after Charlotte’s discharge from hospital, all of the medications required for the 2.5 year treatment plan necessary for her full recovery are not covered by OHIP.

A Day For Charlotte

Beautiful Charlotte Avery was born on November 13, 2013.
From the get go Charlotte has been feisty and charming, renewing the old and mundane through her new adventurous eyes for all of us around her. Then her world changed.
Now her health journey begins. The 1st phase started May 29 with a 30-day chemotherapy treatment plan with the outcome of remission for Charlotte. From here Charlotte will start the 2nd phase of consolidation for 60 days and then the 3rd phase of maintenance for 2 years with the final outcome of a cancer free life for Charlotte.
Once discharged from the hospital much of her treatment will be administered by her Mommy. During this time Mommy will be home with Charlotte for the next 2.5 years.

This is the Auction....

People You May or May Not Know....But Should....Dan Boul....

The Mighty Phil X was a guest on Lunch with Dan Boul a few weeks ago....He's been on the show a few times now....

This is not the first time I have come across Mr Boul of 65Amps fame but this was the first time I spent any time actually listening to the man..."or should that be The Dude"....Long Story Short as Victor Kiam would say "I liked it so much I bought the company"....OK....not the company but I did by an amp....a 65Amps Ventura....

ain't she perdy....

Anywho....Lunch with Dan Boul has been airing for a few years now....you can watch live and ask questions or you can watch on YouTube....if he remembers to upload it....The shows are a little over a hour ish long....it's Dan plus guests playing 65Amps....it's just like an evening with Peter Ustinov but with swearing and guitars....it racers along and you get sucked in....the man can charm the ass off a donkey....

David Ryan Harris from John Mayer's band playing a Ventura....This Vid made my mind up for me that a Dr Z or a Jackson Ampworks amp would have to be a next time purchase....Considering that this is on YouTube the Ventura sounds awesome and trust me it is when you play one for real....The Ventura was going to be for home use only but it's so good it's going to be my main amp using my Evil Robot as a slave to give the Ventura's 20watts a kick up in volume for giging....More on that in another post....

Sometimes the show is given over to Tech Talk....Here we have Myles Rose from Guitar Amplifier Blueprinting....longtime friend and tube guru....Myles used to work for Groove Tubes when they were owned by Aspen Pittman....it's clear that what he dosn't know about tubes ain't worth knowing....In the few months I've been watching the show I've learnt more about amps from Dan and Myles than I've learnt in the past 20 years....

Mostly the guests are 65Amps players....but don't let that put you off....the show is a blast of fun that beats watching TV....and if you don't know who Frankie Whyte is....you will....check her out here....

But it's all changing....Lunch with Dan Boul is moving from Dave Friedman's Tone Merchants in LA to LUCKY STRIKE LIVE in Hollywood....Fingers crossed it's still going to be the same show....but now with alcohol and bowling....what could be better....Wednesdays 12pm Pacific Time....in the UK that's 8PM....Go to NMB Live....you don't have to sign up to watch....but if you want to say hi and ask a question or two....you will have to sort out a user name and a password....simple as that....k.j.

Happy Birthday to Me....Egnater Rebel30 mkII....

I have been looking for a new home use amp that would fit in with the Evil Robot....Something that would rock a bit like a Marshall....and as I have had an Egnater Rebel 30 before...."it died and was replaced with it's larger sibling the Renegade"....what could go wrong....

I was looking at a Fuchs Black Jack 21 mkII head from Thomann....dicked about for about a week looking at other amps and miss it....it was the last one they had....Guttered....Dr Z Remedy looked good but luckily no loop....I do need a loop....Then a Jackson Ampworks Briton 30 but this was getting expensive and the amp needs to be similar to the ER C30 and not a replacement....Whilst not as good as the Fuchs....the new and improved version of the Rebel 30 looked to be the best of a small list....but from it's first switch on it was clear that the  little Egnater had a problem....

At first I thought it might be just a bad tube....I could see by the glow coming from the EL84's the biasing was a little out....Egnater make it very easy with a multi meter to check the biasing and the EL84 side was way out running at 78mV instead of 40mV....Checked all the tubes....all came back as good....but even after a proper biasing the Rebel 30 seemed to be getting worse....Nothing I could do over the long Bank Holiday weekend apart from trying out different tubes and see if it would burn itself into a better sounding amp....lol....it didn't....

Got on the phone to Guitar Guitar on Tuesday to order up a replacement....only GG had other ideas....Bought on the 1st of April....Refunded on the 27th of April....not cool GG....Anywho....as for the fault....unfortunately GG never let me know what the problem was....if I had to guess it would be down to the WATTS circuit....this lets you dial the power from 30watts down to 1watt....this looks very similar to the output power scaling kits you can get from London Power....

It was clear the Watts circuit was not working properly....it was almost acting like a slow gate as you went from channel to channel....taking a few seconds to kick in and drop the output volume to where is was set....but the out of tune sound I was getting from the amp makes me think that the fault was the filter caps going bad....but to be honest....I don't have a clue what the problem was....It was so much hard work just playing it for the video that GG wanted of the fault before they would do anything....The thing was just plain nasty sounding and fought me all the time I was playing it....But would I get another one....

If you cant see this video it's here....

Egnater's are well made...."love my Renegade"....yes built in China but it's an amp that no corners have been cut to save money....the Pre Amp is made up of 3 12AX7's....the FX Loop has it's own 12AX7 for the send and return....as does the Phase Inverter....If you were being picky....the only thing missing is a proper transformer choke....but some designs don't need them....Egnater's are built old school ish....no new mini surface mount crap....just plain old big components using thru hole mounting....it's a tube amp not a 9v pedal....when it goes wrong you're going to get it fixed yeah....trying fixing surface mount....

The output tubes were perfectly matched and the pre amp tubes all tested as being balanced....Egnater do seem to install better than average tubes in their amps....Love the red circuit board and it's red transformers....maybe a little too Mercury Red....but the little amp does never the less look cool....comes in it's own padded gig bag....big rubber feet....it's a lot of amp for the money....unless I find a Fuchs Black Jack 21 and if I can try one first and walk out with it under my arm I'll have another Rebel 30 without hesitation....

Just not from Guitar Guitar....Who are now on my list....lol....k.j.
