TC Electronic G-System....Worth the Money....

I have been asked why I think the TC Electronic G-System is a piece of crap....

The reason is because TC have abandoned it....They have left it to random guys on the internet to try and explain how to set it up....When it's set up it's an awesome sounding piece of kit....But it has to be 100% perfectly dialed in for you to get anywhere near a good tone....You can have it less than perfectly set up and get some great sounds....but 9 out of 10 time's it’ll sound rough as hell....TC's forum is full of users who can not get the thing sorted and TC don't give a fuck....TC only have themselves to blame for the G-S not selling....They have got behind in a big way their new cheap pedal range....”yes cheap....it hasn’t been that long since you could easily spend £350 on a TC Foot Pedal”....but now you can spend £99 on a TC Pedal and download as many Tone Prints as you want....Spend a day watching 200 TC Official Boobtube Vids about the Polytune....But spend over £1000 on a G-S and your on your own....what’s Danish for “stick it up your arse”....

TC have just reduced the RRP of the G-S....but £850 for State of the Art Technology that is nearly 10 years old is still taking the piss some what....

The TC Hall of Fame Pedal has 10 reverb types where as the G-S has only 4....The Flashback Pedal....9 delay types and a Looper function....the G-S 7 types and no Looper.... The Latency delay when using Volume and Expression Pedals makes the feature unusable for anything but a foot operated Volume Mute....

A few minutes searching the TC Forum will bring up 100's of users having problems with the 4 Insert Loops of their G-S....the Loops seem to suck all the character out of Pedals making them sound generic and cheap....

Then there is the “Green Screen of Death”....it's the same as the Windows “Blue Screen of Death” but can in some cases can prove fatal....resulting in “if out of warranty” a expensive return to TC HQ for repairs....if you can not re-flash the firmware back to a older version with the aid of a laptop that is....

TC have never really addressed any of these issue’s apart from the odd firmware up-date and a re-design of the Input Buffer....But it would have been better if they had changed it so you could switch the buffers off....The 4 Insert Loops each have a buffer....So if your pedals all have buffers and all 4 pedals are on....your running through 9 buffers....?....

Now I could be talking crap....but think about this....

PC Processors have a lifespan of about 2 years....they start as High End and Expensive....then become Mid Price....and finally Cheap and Budget as faster and faster processors are brought out onto the market....after 18 months they are not even made any more....So if TC were constantly building G-S with newer and newer faster processors the latency issue would have by been solved on its own....The G-S would be constantly improving due to those faster and faster processor speeds....but the delay when using the Volume and Expression Pedals is still a problem....still found in the new version of the G-S....TC have said that the processor in the Polytune is the fastest processor that they use in any of their hardware....so their £65 tuner runs faster than their top of the range multi-effect processor...WTF....

I can only think that someone at TC....10 years ago....must have thought that the G-S was going to sell in big numbers and thought it would be a good idea to buy a large amount of circuit boards....processors and internals to keep up with demand and thus saving money buying in bulk....So are the brand spanking new G-S built with internals that have sat in a box...on a shelf....for the past 10 years....

Don't get me wrong....I love my G-S....the hours and hours and hours and literately hours that I have spent sat cross legged in front of the bloody thing setting it up....has paid off in a tone that sounds awesome....I still wish I had never bought the thing....it only sounds good because it's running through the £700 GigRig G2....

Issue’s aside the G-S is too heavy....ends up in a stupidly massive pedalboard or boards....too large for giging in pubs....and regarding the Green Screen of Death....too fragile for the riggers of On-the-Road life without a back-up and laptop....or both....

Now....If your reading this I'm going to regard you as a friend....and as a friend if you asked me if you should get one I would say “NO...ARE FUCKING INSANE”....but....if your a bit of a Magpie and like the Red Flashing Bling of the G-S and you can get one second-hand for £350-£400....very possible now that TC has reduced the RRP....and you understand that to get the best tone from the it you will also need a quality switching looper....The GigRig G2 has made my G-S as near to silent as I have ever had it and I don't have to put any pedals in the G-S's problematic built in Loops....In a nerdy sort of way the G-S is a lot of fun....It's just that with all it's issue'.... it's not worth what TC asks for it....

If you are still thinking of getting one let me leave you with this....what you are buying is state of the art technology that's nearly 10 years old….I have a laptop you might be interested in....it has a 10-inch screen....850MHz Pentium 3....256MB of RAM....30GB hard drive....one USB port....all running on Microsoft’s finest....Windows XP....a bargain and yours for £850....k.j.

This is a nice Video of Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree showing off his set up....this will do till I sort one of my videos out....scroll on to nearly 21 minutes in....Thank Q Premier Guitar....
